Rainy day activities

Too wet to brave leaving the house?

A whole day inside with a baby can be intimidating - it’s a long time to fill when they’re still a bit young for baking or drawing… But that also means they still don’t realise when you get them involved in chores. Many little ones are captivated by the washing machine. While you might not have space to hang out multiple washes - sit them in front of the drum while a load is on and they’re happy as larry for enough time for you to make a cup of tea or do your teeth. Winning!

Next, get them involved in a clothes and toy sort out. They don’t know that your emptying clothes onto the floor isn’t making mountains for them to revel in - and it’s even better when it’s toys! They get a ready made obstacle course/rediscover the hideous teddy you hid at the bottom of the toy box, while you can sort through and surreptitiously fill a few bags for charity.

Once the room’s in order, why not celebrate with some bubbles? Bubble inc do a great wooden bubble kit - with a great selection of wands to keep baby entertained… until they start trying to drink the solution.

Then it’s time to find some chickpeas and an empty bottle or coffee tin - fill it up, and make some music with your rainmaker!

If you have an old first aid kit/access to a pharmacy, another thing that will keep them entertained is a heat retaining blanket. There’s something about the reflections, the crackle and the light that has them transfixed. You’re welcome.

And if it’s day three of torrential rain and you’re happy to get a bit wet for some respite, then have a look for your local soft play area. They come into their own once babies start crawling - a padded, enclosed area where they can wear themselves out, and you can have a coffee while observing from a distance. The dream.
